Conway Beam Truck Group

On January 2, 1951 Beam Mack Sales & Service Inc. began operations at 1357 University Avenue in Rochester, NY at the former home of the local factory branch of Mack Trucks. The doors opened with twelve employees and it soon became evident that a newer and larger site was necessary to adequately accommodate the business’ needs; the space was poorly laid out for an efficient operation, parking space was inadequate, and it was rumored that the five year lease would not be renewed.  It was a difficult time for the new enterprise and the new management team. Fred Beam, the founder of the company, died in February of 1953 leaving the business in the hands of his son-in-law Elmer Conway with two years of experience in the truck industry. Competitors were quick to predict an early demise of a new, fledgling company; yet, doubters were soon proved wrong. The business flourished and grew steadily, proving each year to be more promising than the previous one.
